
About Julie McGough

Julie McGough is an innovative and expressive flutist whose beautiful, singing tone and musical artistry have made her one of the most sought-after performers in the Pittsburgh area and beyond. Currently serving as the 2nd flutist with Pittsburgh Opera Orchestra, Julie enjoys a diverse and fulfilling career as a soloist, orchestral musician, and educator.
A vital part of the Pittsburgh freelance scene, she frequently performs with the Pittsburgh Ballet Orchestra, the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Festival Opera, the Allegheny City Ragtime Orchestra, and Akron Symphony, among others. Her contributions to the classical music world also include solo performances at National Flute Association conventions in Orlando, Nashville, and Pittsburgh. Julie was presented in her NYC Carnegie Hall debut recital at Weill Recital Hall in 2004, by Artists International, Inc. This full-length solo recital featured the world premiere of 9 Walks Down 7th Avenue, a work by Daniel Dorff written for her.
As a passionate educator, Julie is the owner and instructor at the Flute Studio Pittsburgh, where she shares her extensive knowledge and love of the flute with students of all ages. She also serves as the Adjunct Professor of Flute at Washington & Jefferson College, where she continues to inspire the next generation of flutists.
In addition to her performing and teaching career, Julie is the Executive Director of The Consummate Flutist, at Carnegie Mellon University, a prestigious masterclass series co-founded by legendary flutists Jeanne Baxtresser and Alberto Almarza. Since its inception in 2013, these masterclasses have become a leading destination for advanced high school and college flutists from around the world.
Julie’s academic background includes a BFA in Flute Performance from Carnegie Mellon University and a Master of Music in Flute Performance from the Manhattan School of Music. She has studied with many of the leading figures in the flute world, including Jeanne Baxtresser, Alberto Almarza, Stephanie Mortimore, Linda Chesis, and Jennifer Steele, among others.
Beyond her musical career, Julie is a proud mother and wife. She shares her life with her husband, Stephen, a fellow musician, educator, and volunteer firefighter, and their three daughters, all of whom are young musicians themselves. Julie is also deeply passionate about environmental sustainability, natural and organic food, and yoga. In her free time, she enjoys gourmet cooking, reading, and connecting with her neighbors and friends.
Julie McGough’s dedication to her craft, her students, and her community makes her not just a consummate flutist, but a true ambassador for the arts and a beloved figure in the Pittsburgh music scene.
