College Audition & Application Counseling

Applying for college?  It's a monumental task - applications, visits, essays, recommendation letters... Applying to be a music major?  It's a daunting task because now you have pre-screens, auditions and interviews too.  It can make your head spin!

I'm here to help make it all MUCH easier!  I've been helping students apply and audition for colleges for almost 20 years now.  And not only that, I am also a mom who had to guide her own daughter through the college audition process.  So I know it all from both the college/teacher side, and the parent/student side.  I know what it's like to be in your shoes and I want to make it easier (and actually fun) for you!  I love college audition season and I LOVE finding colleges and students that are perfect fits and making the MATCH!

If you already have a teacher, that's OK! My consultation package does not include lessons I am here to guide you step-by-step through the college application and audition process.  If you don't have a teacher, then you can add private lessons with me as needed.

The Flute Studio College Audition & Application Program includes:

  • parent/teacher/student meetings to discuss college selection, portfolio requirements, audition requirements, pre-screening recordings, and a plan of action for success

  • detailed timeline and checklist

  • college selection advice - finding the best fit

  • review of pre-screen material

  • essay reviews

  • help with scheduling pre-screening recordings and accompanists as necessary

  • reminders to get stuff done (take the pressure off mom and dad and let me remind them to get essays and recordings done!)

  • Help deciding between offers and asking for additional money

  • Assistance finding additional scholarships

OPTIONAL ADD-ONS:

- Private coaching ($75/hour)

This process usually begins in junior year, but students can also enter the program at any time during high school.  The earlier we begin discussing the option of pursuing music in college, the better we can prepare and discuss steps to take and activities that will help make you a better candidate for a college music program.

Julie McGough is proud to offer comprehensive counseling for flutists interested in applying for college music programs.  She is one of the founding members of The Consummate Flutist College Audition Program at Carnegie Mellon University and has been preparing flutists for college auditions for over 15 years.  Her students have been accepted to major universities and conservatories for FLUTE PERFORMANCE and MUSIC EDUCATION, as well as dual degree programs and music minors.

To get started, I'd like to get to know you!  So, gather your parent(s) and your dreams for a college and schedule an initial, no-obligation, one-hour consultation.  We will come up with a list of colleges that will be a best-fit for you and how to get you there (including the pre-screen process) and your career goals.  Book your consultation today!
